Writing Styles: Leaflet or Flyer                       


What is a Leaflet or Flyer?
Leaflets are a type of open letter which is designed to be handed out to people, either by hand, by post, or inserted in local newspapers for distribution, to grab their attention.

  1. Why Write a Leaflet?
·         To advertise a product
·         To provide information about important issues and events
·         To draw attention to any organisation, cause or event.
·         It spurs someone to take an action
2.    Designing a Leaflet: STRUCTURAL FEATURES
·         Title & a slogan
·         Introduction
·         Subheadings
·         Attractive illustrations and photographs
·         Include contact information, and where to get further details
  1. Title & Slogan: GET ATTENTION
Grab the reader’s attention. Start with a catchy heading, or rhetorical questions or a catchy slogans; such as:
·         ‘Saving you money every day.’
·         ‘Every little helps!’
·         ‘Try something new every day.’
·         ’Fancy a great holiday break?’
  1. Introduction
·         Write the history, mission or vision of the organization here.
·         Example: ‘The Humanitarian Reform Organization was introduced in 2008. It aims to make humanitarian response more expected and develop harmony among humanitarians. The objective is also to inculcate leadership qualities, improved planning and enhanced accountability.’
  1. Subheadings Give informative heading for different sections. Sections provide information and facts about the topic.
·         BE LUCID: Give a clear idea of what the reader is expected to do
·         Keep that idea in the readers mind
·         Persuade the reader to take action.
6.    Subheadings: BE PERSUASIVE
·         Give a solution to the problem
·         Be specific, state the benefit clearly in the leaflet
·         Use compelling language
·         Tell people why this event is good for them.
·         Be clear what the promotion is about

7.    Designing a Leaflet: GRAMMATICAL FEATURES:
·         A range of different tenses - They are usually written in the present tense, employing emotive language and often using metaphors and similes.
·         Simple and direct language
·         Use of positive words
·         Use of non- discriminatory language
·         Use Superlatives, such as: Biggest, brightest, tastiest, creamiest, freshest, quickest etc.
·         Use Imperatives, such as: ‘You must buy this...’‘Don’t miss this great offer...’ ‘Don’t delay, buy today!’
8.    Contact Information
·         Include contact information, and where to get further details ( phone/ cell number, email address etc)


The following are three examples of a leaflet. The fourth example is using WORD to create a leaflet.




















Using WORD to create a leaflet:
Use Page Layout to change from Portrait to LANDSCAPE
Use Insert - Shapes, and Insert - DRAW TEXT BOX 
You can use Format to change/fill colours. You can change the font style and colours; and insert bullet points in the text box. 
You can also insert pictures or clip-art. Create your own design.
